P!NK - SO WHAT (Textual Analysis 3)

Written by: P!nk, Max Martin and Shellback
Producer: Max Martin
Genre: Pop Rock
Structure: Narrative
Label: LaFace, Jive

This song 'So What?' is sang by American recording artist P!nk about her having a break up with her boyfriend but acting like she doesn't care about it and that she will be fine without him. The music video has a narrative structure and contains scenes of P!nk driving a lawnmover down the streets, her cutting down a tree with her and her ex's name on, her singing at a concert, her in a guitar shop, and her in a house having a pillow fight. The structure of this song is very typical of the pop genre and follows it's conventions, yet the usual pop songs are about love and being in a relationship, whilst hers is about a break up and her being happy about it. The song is an uptempo pop rock song influienced by club music.

The location of this video is shot in many different places, but all are locations where P!nk is being wild and outrageous, showing her feelings for her relationship and that she doesn't really care about her break up. The first scene opens the song to P!nk being sat in a tattoo shop getting her tattoo of her and her husband covered up with the word 'VOID' in bold capital red lettering. The meaning of void typically means 'something that doesn't contain anything, and is empty', which is conveying to the audience that her feelings about her ex husband are empty. There is a scene within the video that is P!nk driving down a busy road on a lawnmower, with all of the drivers behind her waving her hands at her suggesting that they are annoyed. This is showing first of all that she doesn't care what anyone else thinks or what they have to say, she just wants to enjoy herself and forget about everything. The whole video contains scenes of P!nk being reckless, for example when she enters the guitar shop and starts playing as guitar, then decides that she wants to smash it up and starts a fight with the guy who works at the store, and this is showing her anger about her break up and that she is taking it out on everyone else.

In relation to cinematography, the camera uses a lot of close ups and medium shots, which is very typical music videos to use, as it shows the feelings of the artists face and their actions to tell the narrative. The camera also uses some slow zooms and this is used to create more of an atmosphere to the music video, making the video and song appealing to watch and listen to. In some scenes the camera is hand held and it has a slight shaking movement to it when P!nk is performing aggressive or wild actions, and this again gives more atmosphere and makes it more exciting. Also, it conveys her feelings of aggression across to the audience by the shaky hand held camera. In relation to editing, there are constant cuts throughout the video, adding to the fast beat of the song and keeping up with the fast narrative. If the cuts were slow, they would not match with the beat or the lyrics and it wouldn't give the video excitement. At the end of the video, there is a fast fading out effect, and this could connote that her feelings for her ex husband have faded. Fades are also usually typical of music videos because it looks neater and better than a straight cut with an abrupt ending. In relation to editing, in the scene were P!nk and her husband are together, there are headlines from the newspaper floating around in the background for example 'P!nk has "Hart" break' relates directly to her relationship as her husbands last name is Hart. The way the headlines are floating about in the background could maybe connote that P!nk doesn't care about what the media says.

In relation to costume, there are strong connotations of her going crazy and insane because of her break up, and what shows this is her hair when it is spiky and raised upwards, and this gives the look that she has been electrocuted. When she is in the tattoo studio, she is dressed all in black, connoting her anger and frustration for her ex husband. Some of her costumes that she is wearing throughout the video are sometimes revealing, for example her low cut top when she is driving the lawnmower. This could connote that she is trying to gain males attention to make herself feel better, but it could also connote that she wants change her appearance in order to forget about him. This relates to Laura Mulveys theory of women are perceived how men want them to be perceived, because P!nk dressing the way she is in this video, is appealing to the male eye, and this can relate to voyeurism.

The target audience for this video would be teenagers and young adults, usually females, but the actual lyrics would be aimed at people who have been through a break up and want to act as if they don't care. The lyrics give the audience a sense of feeling strong and sure about a relationship that has ended, and gives the audience positive feelings. As the video can also be seen as a comedy, it makes the song more positive because it makes people laugh when they watch it. The ideology of this song is represented very strongly because it is put across is every scene that the ideology of the song is about love that has ended. The music video almost makes the ideology look like a joke and makes it look not serious, as if it is slating off sad typical love songs about them being unhappy and P!nk is showing everyone that you don't need to be unhappy, because she has so much to look forward to and she doesn't need a man to make her life any better.

PARAMORE - STILL INTO YOU (Textual Analysis 2)

Written by: Hayley Williams and Taylor York
Producer: Justin Meldal-Johnsen
Genre: Power pop, pop rock and new wave
Structure: Abstract
Label: Fueled by Ramen

This song is a song by Paramore an American rock band. The music video has no narrative to the lyrics but instead includes the band riding round on BMX bikes inside a house, a room full of balloons with them performing on a boat and Hayley Williams singing surrounded by ballet dancers dressed in white. A narrative is usually typical of pop/rock music videos, yet this video has an abstract structure which breaks the typical conventions of this genre and the 'love' lyrics.

In relation to mise-en-scene, the establishing shot of this music video is a large room full of white and blue balloons surrounding the band on a blue boat. The blue and white balloons are to represent the sea, which is why the boat is also in the middle of the room. This scene could have connotations of Hayleys feelings for her boyfriend, for example, she may feel that in love with her boyfriend that she has drifted off, but it could also represent a dream, meaning that Hayley is head over heels for her boyfriend. In the boat, Hayley is holding a umbrella  The umbrella and the sea all have connotations of the weather, and this could represent that she loves her partner through any weather, no matter how tough their relationship is. In this boat we also see the other two male band members and their clothing. One male is wearing bright yellow skinny jeans and a leopard print top with a black body warmer, whilst the other is wearing black skinny jeans with just a leopard print top. These items of clothing stand out a lot, and this could be for the reason of making the band stand out in the busy background. the clothes are also bright, connoting feelings of happiness and joy, which the song is about. The next scene is of Hayley in bed in her bedroom. Surround her are dozens of birthday cakes with lit candles. These are representations of how long the couple has been together, and they also link in with the diegetic sound of the lyric "can't count the years on one hand that we've been together". The colours of the bedroom are pinks, blues and yellows, again these colours have connotations of happiness, calmess and love, these colours are also the colours that Hayley is wearing, with her pink skirt and her blue pink and yellow jacket. Next, the music video shows us the scene of the band riding round the mansion on BMX bikes. The fact that Hayley is the only female band member and she is riding on the bikes with the males, shows the audience a bit of her personality, and shows that she is different to other girls. In relation to theories, this can be associated with Tessa Perkins stereotyping theory, because Hayley is not stereo typically dancing around in hardly any clothes on, she has nice a respectable clothes on, and she is acting completely different to other typical women in music videos. This also goes against Laura Mulvey's male gaze theory, as Hayley is not dressed sexually for men. For the chorus of the song, the scene shows the audience that the band are in a huge empty room, with very dim lighting, and the male band members are riding around the room on their BMX's, where as Hayley is singing towards the camera performing. Around the room there are sparks and flashes of lights on the wall, which looks a lot like fireworks. This is representing again Hayleys feelings and how her and her boyfriend have a spark in their relationship. Hayley in this scene is jumping and dancing about a lot, and this shows her excitement for her boyfriend but, it could also be representing her as being a firework, as that is how she feels when she is around her partner. The next scene shows Hayley in a large room with bright white lights at the back of the room. Around her are women dancing dressed as swans in white. In this scence, Hayley stands out very much as she is wearing pink, blue and yellow in contrast to white like the dancers. This is a representation of Hayley being different to other girls, and it represents her not being boring, plain and the same as everyone else. This is very appealing to the female audience as they want to be seen as different too, so they look up to Hayley to make themselves feel different. Towards the end of the video, the band are stood outside on a field with sparklers and there are fireworks erupting in the sky. Hayley and the male band members are dancing about with happy facial expressions, and this is relating to the mood of the song, which is happy and contentment.

In relation to cinematography, the establishing shot of the music video shows an upwards tilt from the balloons to the band sat in a boat. This upwards tilt helps the audience to recognize the surroundings and location of the music video, helping the audience gather their first individual interpretations of the video and song. Within the scene of the bedroom, there is a pan shot used across the room to then view Hayley. This pan shot also shows the audience the location where Hayley is, and it also shows her surroundings, for example the birthday cakes in the room which are to represent the years they have been together. The medium close up of Hayley laid on the bed shows the audience her happy feelings, and also her clothing. The way that the audience can see her feelings is setting the atmosphere of the music video, which is clearly happy. Seeing Hayleys clothing also determines the atmosphere because of the colours which she is wearing. Onto the chorus, the long shot of the scene shows the audience the full location of the room, which enables us to see the male band members riding on their bikes, Hayley singing and also the firework lights on the wall. The long shot also gives the audience more to look at, providing more entertainment. The scene when Hayley is dancing with the swan dancers around her shows a long shot downwards tilt. This shot shows Hayley to stand out more, and it also looks as if she is singing up towards the sky, representing how in love she actually is with her boyfriend. At the end of the video, the camera pans off from Hayley towards the night sky after she has sang the last lyric. This pan helps the audience to concentrate on Hayleys loving feelings, and leaves the audience feelings happy and joyful. As the last thing the audience see is fireworks, they are seen to be exciting things, so it is going to leave the audience also feeling some excitement.

In relation to sound, at the very beginning of the video, there is a non diegetic sound starting from low to high volume almost sounding like a drum role. This sound could be a representation of a film starting, and give the audience the feeling of they are about to watch a video that has a full story line, and something that they will enjoy watching. Throughout the song, the constant repetition of the song title "still into you" re in forces the mood of the song, and it constantly reminds the audience of the narrative and what the song is actually about. The lyrics "recount the night that I first met you mother" and "on the drive back to your house I told you that I told you that I loved ya" are pointless meaningless lyrics to people who aren't in a relationship, because they won't be able to relate to it, but people who are in relationships will be able to relate to this video an song, and thy will enjoy doing so, as it may remind them of a loved one.

In relation to editing, at the start of the video, the music video opens with a special effect that is a central swipe across the screen. This has connotations of when being at a cinema and a film starts on the screen. This special effect also relates to the non diegetic drum role sound that I referred to earlier. These together have connotations of a theatre show starting. Also at the beginning, there are special effects of the song title flashing on the screen in pink, yellow and blue colours. This special effect gives the audience something to look at whilst the instrumental is still happening. The colours again are also seen throughout the video, and these bright colours being shown at the beginning of the video connotes love, happiness and calmness as they are very light and bright colours. throughout the video there are fast jump cuts to match the upbeat song. This is to keep up with the pace of the song and tie the music and the video together. Around the middle of the video during the 14 second instrumental, the edits within this slow down, and this is because the music calms down and becomes quieter. These slow jump cuts make the audience appreciate what is going on in the music video for that amount of time, and it also forces on them to feel happy and love feelings.

AVRIL LAVIGNE - GIRLFRIEND (Textual Analysis 1)

Written by: Avril Lavigne and Lukasz Gottwald
Producer: Dr. Luke
Genre: Dance-rock, pop punk, power pop
Structure: Narrative
Label: RCA

In this music video Avril Lavigne plays two separate roles, one as boys girlfriend, and one as the girl that fancies the boy. The issue between the two female characters is that they both want the same boy to be their boyfriend. This type of narrative is typical in pop music videos and I would say that this video follows the typical conventions of it's genre and expectations.

In relation to mise-en-scene, the establishing shot of the music video is a long shot of the 'Golf n Stuff' activity building, and this shows where the rest of the music video is to be set. The medium shot of the 'geeky' girlfriend and her 'cool' boyfriend shows their costumes. The girl is wearing a pink polo and a pink cardigan with a green and blue long tartan skirt. This costume is very effective in showing the audience what her role is within the video, and from the way she is dressed, it is showing her personality and her agenda. The glasses are in her costume as it is a stereotypical prop to be used for geeky characters. Also, the ginger hair is stereotypically not a 'cool' colour of hair to have and it is also going to be classed as 'geeky' to the audience. The male is wearing black skinny jeans, with a long sleeved white t shirt underneath a short sleeved black top. This costume is representing his personality, which is portrayed as being 'cool'. Avril's costume in this scene is long dark black hair, with a similar costume to what the male is wearing, and this could be to represent that they are both the same, and it is them that should be together. The way the couple are holding hands shows both of their agendas which is that they are in a relationship. The geeky girlfriend is constantly giving mucky looks to Avril throughout the video, as she is trying to take away her boyfriend. This gives off the idea to the audience that she has a slight attitude, and this is to purposely persuade the audience to dislike this character, and view Avril as the protagonist. In the music video, there are also scenes of performance, when Avril Lavigne is performing with her band, the costume she is wearing here is different to their other scenes. She has her natural long blonde hair, along with a shot blue tartan skirt, knee high white socks and a white t shirt. The short tartan skirt and knee high socks are viewed by the audience, especially by men, as a sexy and attractive look. This costume that she is wearing in this scene can be related to Laura Mulvey's male gaze theory. The fact that Avril has two costumes in the music video can be to show that she has two sides, making her not as plain and boring as the ginger girl. Roughly in the middle of the video and towards the end, there are medium close up scenes of Avril singing towards the camera, surrounded by black, so it looks as if she is in the spotlight. This represents that she is the one in the spotlight, not the other girlfriend. It can also represent the males eyesight in the video, that he is focused on Avril, and not his girlfriend.

In relation to cinematography, throughout the performance scenes of Avril singing with her band, there is a lot of fast track panning, and this is to show all of the band performing, and it also adds to the videos excitement, keeping the audience engaged. In the video there is a scene of the geeky girlfriend and her boyfriend go karting, and then Avril comes and joins in with them. The backwards over the shoulder shot of Avril bumping into the back of the geeky girlfriends go kart shows a lot of dominance, and it is threatening towards her, making Avril the powerful and more fun girl to be with. In the bathroom scene when Avril is singing to the male, there are a lot of zooms both in and out, and fast tilts, this is to represent the excitement that Avril and the male feel when they are together, persuading the audience even more to make them want them both to be together. In relation to mise en scene, the bathroom and Avril's top is blue, connoting that she is a protagonist, not an antagonist. Also when on the bathroom scene, Avril draws a red cross on the mirror with her lipstick when the camera zooms in and out. This red is connoting danger towards the geeky girlfriend and is a warning sign for the boyfriend not to be with him. It can also connote Avril's hatred towards her. Towards the end of the video, Avril is pushing the male into a toilet cubicle whilst taking his jacket off. The cinematography in this scene is shaky hand held camera movement. This again is representing their excitement for eachother and it is also connoting Avril's power over him, showing that she is the dominant one, and that she can get him to do anything she wants. This can appeal to the audience because to some women, they enjoy being a dominant figure, so Avril in this video would be someone to look up to.

In relation to editing, throughout the music video there are constant fast jump cuts. This is so it matches with the fast, upbeat pace of the song, and also to make the video more entertaining to watch. There is nothing more boring in a music video than a slow and boring cuts, which is the advice that I am taking when making my music video. At the end of the video, we see the geeky girlfriend falls into the pond. The editing on this action slpws down, and this emphasises to the audience what is happening, and emphasises the comedy of the moment. On the bathroom shot that I have already reffered to earlier, the edits are extremely fast matching the beat of the song, but the edits are also buliding up exitment, and even some nerves, as the audience are waiting to see if she gets the boyfriend. These fast edits also put Avril in the perspective of being wild and fun, different to the other girl, making her the more appealing choice to the male.

In relation to sound, at the beginning of the video, there is non diegetic sound of people playing video games in the background and people laughing and talking. The diegesis of the video games could be representing the fact that Avril is about to start playing a game with the geeky girlfriend to win over her boyfriend. the laughing and chatter re inforces to the audience the location they are in, which is an activity place. After this non diegetic sound, Avril comes in with the firsy lyric of "hey hey you you I don't like your girlfriend". This straight away puts Avril in a dominant position over the geeky girlfriend and makes her look confident and the more appealing girl. The lyric is very face threatening towards the girlfriend, and it makes her look be littled from the start of the music video, setting in place the narrative. In the chrous, the diegetic sound of "I want to be your girlfriend" again is placing the narrative for the music video, and it is also setting the audiences expectations, which are for Avril in the end to be with the boy. The diegetic sound of "In a second you'll be wrapped around my finger" shows Avril again as being the dominant figure in the video. This also can give them female audience a sense of power over men, thinking that they have the control over men, not the other way round, making this video appealing to women aswell as men. Finally, the diegetic sound of "She's so stupid what the hell were you thinking" is very threatening towards the geeky girlfriend, but it also places the audience in a position of being on Avril's side, therefore viewing her as the protagonist.

Skills Development Essay

A2 Media Studies

Skills development evaluation essay

Last year doing AS media studies I developed and improved a lot within the areas of digital technology, creativity, research and planning and post production.

At the beginning of the media course I produced a perfume advert named ‘Elegance’. I had limited skills of knowing how to use Photoshop and had limited skills of knowing how to take a photograph whilst considering angles, the type of shots used etc. Looking back on this project has shown me how much my creativity and knowledge of digital technology has improved. One positive on my perfume advert was that I had put a lot of effort into makeup and hair to make the product seem more realistic. The negatives are that there wasn’t much research and planning to the product, but from my research and planning that was put in to my music magazine showed how much better the quality of the product was.

My college magazine project has also shown me how much my skills in media have improved. Whilst doing this project, I took more time with the planning and research and tried to widen my creativity. My Photoshop skills were improved but they were still only limited. One positive skill that came out of this project was that I took into consideration the angles and what type of shot should be taken for the front page. I had experimented with more than 10 photographs of my own, and I had researched and looked at other college magazines online and compared what similarities they all shared and tried to include them similarities on my college magazine, for example, competitions.  The negative of this project was that it wasn’t creative enough and looking back on it now makes me realise how bland and unappealing it looks. Although the college magazine was not of my best standard, it helped me learn skills that I then took on and improved whilst making my music magazine, for example, the skills I picked up on Photoshop, and what work had to be put into research and planning.

On to my music magazine, this was the project that I put most of my effort and skills in to. With previous experience in making a magazine on Photoshop, I already had a rough idea of what I was going to be doing. I put a lot of effort in to my music magazine project and was doing more research and planning. I felt like the LIIAR analysis’s helped me a lot because they helped me pick out magazine conventions and it gave me a chance to look at the rock genre that I had chosen for my music magazine. I also thought that doing all the drafts of the music magazine helped me gain more of an understanding about the layout of magazines and it gave my teacher the chance to give constructive criticism which helped a lot and gave me the chance to keep improving. I also felt like I had improved a lot on my creativity because I had started to experiment more with my photographs I was taking. I had my model pose differently for every shot but I kept the rock genre in mind. I used newspaper as a backdrop to convey the main article of my magazine which was that all the newspapers were talking about my main star on my front page. On my blog, I showed that I had done research and planning in every area including mise en scene, lighting, costume, hair and make-up etc. and this showed all of the steps that I had taken in to making my final magazine front cover. What also helped me a lot was looking at real media texts and what type of articles were featured in Indie and Rock magazines such as NME and Kerrang. This gave me an idea of what type of article I was going to produce, and the type of character I had to create with my model. This helped me decide of what poses I should use for the front cover, and also what cover lines I should include to convey the genre of my magazine.

When it came to doing my final evaluation for my music magazine, I tried to use a wide variety of media to show my creativity and to show the examiner that I am able to use different types of media confidently. I used Prezi which is a website that allows you to produce virtual power points. Secondly I used PowerPoint instead of Word, and lastly I used GoAnimate, which is a website that allows you to create an animated video.  By using these different types of media, I now can take them onto my next year on A2 media and use them again hopefully better and with more experience. I produced a small survey on my blog that included questions such as ‘what magazines do you prefer to listen to?’, ‘which of the following artists or bands do you prefer’ and ‘what genre of music do you prefer’. There were also questions included about the age range that the audience were and etc. From this survey, I gathered information from what people had answered and used this information to start basing my magazine.

As I look back on my AS blog from the beginning, I can see how much I improved throughout the year, and I could see how much more detail I was including in my research, especially from the perfume advert. My LIIAR analyses have improved throughout the assignment as well as my note taking and this has helped me a lot when producing my final music magazine. From using different types of media such as Photoshop etc. and producing research to back up my final product, I found that this made it all a lot easier for me and it got me my grade that I wanted.

CONVETIONS OF POP ROCK MUSIC VIDEOS

                                                             Genre Moodboard

My Chosen Genre

My chosen genre for my A2 advanced portfolio is rock/pop genre. I have chosen this genre because I feel that I have some ideas of songs with good lyrics from this type of genre. In relation to sound, the typical sound conventions of pop/rock music videos are for the lyrics to match the narrative and music video, but this is usually conventional for most music videos of all genres. The editing of the music video usually matches with the sound. There are usually a lot of cuts in pop/rock music videos as the music is quite up beat and fast, and therefore the video is trying to keep up with the music. There are sometimes hand held camera work used to create the effect of of a fun and wild atmosphere. An example of hand held camera work is in Avril Lavinge's video - Girlfriend. They typical mise-en-scene setting in rock/pop music videos are usually in garages or on a live set or the band playing live, although this isn't always the case, and some music videos tend to break these conventions. The typical ideology and expectations of this genre are for the artists to be playing an instrument, usually a guitar, and this allows them to be represented as talented musicians, but it also reminds the audience that they are associated with the rock genre. In pop rock videos, one of the main ideologies are that if you are in a relationship, then you are either going to get hurt by the one you love but usually get 'revenge' or you will stay with 'the one' forever. Artists such as Paramore, Avril Lavigne, Pink and Maroon 5 are examples of artists within the pop rock genre, and they represent this genre through their costumes which are typically leather jackets/jeans, t-shirts and slack bottoms or punk dresses. The target audience for the pop rock genre are typically teenagers or young adults aged 13-21. Music videos now usually consist of women half naked and this would be targeted for the boys, were as the lyrics that actually have meaning would be more specifically aimed at girls.

HISTORY OF MY CHOSEN BRIEF - MUSIC VIDEO

A music video or a song is a short video or film that accompanies a piece of music or song. The role of a modern music video is to primarily increase sales of the implemented tracks as well as promote the artist or band. Music videos are becoming a necessity for any rising artists due to worldwide YouTube access and the increasing number of music television channels. Audiences are growing constantly and they are wanting more of a variety of music and music videos. This includes techniques such as live filming, documentaries and abstract film. Artists and directors interpret the music in different ways, sometimes portraying a narrative or a series of events completely different to the songs lyrics. This can be more entertaining for the audience.

The first step towards the creation of modern music videos occurred in 1894 when George Thomas was hired by duo sheet music publishers Edwards Marks and Joe Stern to create a new form of promotion of their new piece via the use of a 'magic lantern' Thomas and his team projected multiple images onto a backdrop, synchronized with the music at live performances which soon became known as the 'illustrated song'. Vitaphone shorts became of use to this music industry in 1926 with the invention of the 'talking picture'. Singers, dancers and genral performers were projected onto a screen in an almost perfect synchronistaion with the seperatley played audio reel resulting in the early forms of modern television. Depending on the director and the artists budget, the more advanced shorts of this time contained basic animations integrated with the live action film. Due to the size of the reels, shots were only normally 6 minutes long allowing a single track before reloading the projector.

'Screen song' were invented by revered animation artist Max Fletcher. He produced a number of detailed animations, accompanied by the public's favourite songs, allowing the audience to sing along by following the circle over the lyrics displayed at the bottom of the screen. Walt Disney's Fantasia was inspired by this, and they took this concept to a whole new level by producing a film based on the idea.

In 1929, St Louis Blues was released to the public by singer Bessie Smith. The film portrayed a performance of the song and promoted her image throughout the world. Many followed this example, for example Louis Jordan integrated a series of his short clips into a feature length film titled 'Lookout Sister'.

The 1950's brought the era of musical films which were a worldwide instant success. Many new music videos still take inspiration from these films. often imitationg the style of filming, dress and sometimes even an entire scene. An example of this is Madonna's 'Material Girl'. In this video she is imitating the well known singer and actress Marilyn Monroe as she was seen as an iconic figure. Her doing this is conveying to the audience that she is as good as Marilyn, or maybe even better.

With the invention of the television, more artists came to the public eye due to programmes such as Top of the Pops. These programmes promoted the artists, making them more money.  The Beatles were a band that were very enthusiastic about the rising music videos and by the end of 1966, the Beatles style of filimg had become unique to the public eye. They became one of the first groups to utilise the beginnings of colour TV when they filmed clips for 'Rain' and 'Paperback Writer'.

From 1967 artists began to produce 'song films' as an alternative to appearing live to an audience. Pink Floyd were at the cutting edge of the industry and went on to create one of the first ever 'plot driven' music videos. Band throughout Australia and New Zealand began to produce early versions of their own music videos for new releases. This year also bought the first colour music video directed by The Stones for their new realse 'We Love You'. The clip featured a number of new effects such as speeded up footage. Artosts such as Bruce Brown and Alby Falzon deserve a special note for the creation of a number of films syncing surfing footage adited alongside music tracks such as 'Echoes' by Pink Floyd. 23 minutes long, the film was widely shown on TV and went on to inpsire many other bands into following their footsteps in the TV industry.

Australia soon overtook the British in the development of the music TV and premiered shows such as 'Countdown' to popularizing the music video in 1974. They featured live performances as well as regular viewings of the current greatest hit music videos. The UK soon caught on to this and soon after released Top of the Pops. 'Devo' an American alternative punk rock group were responsible for a collection of self produced music videos directed by Chuck Statler. They were one of the first sets of music videos to be released on the video cassette as well as utilise the newly available computer animation and editing effects.

In 1981, music videos breached onto mainstream TV with the launch of the US channel MTV. By the mid 1980's, and now playing a major role in music marketing, this channel begun the era of 24 hour a day music on TV. The music video industry further expanded with the creation and retail of easy to use, inexpensive video recording and editing equipment. The newly developed and widely available visual effects encouraged new techniques of filming and introduced a whole new era of music video. Artists made it their personal aim to expand the various forms and styles related to the genre increasing usage of effects and including more plots in their music videos.

The hip hop and rap genres of music were introduced to Britain  and America by the MTV show 'Yo!'. This style of music had not been experienced by a mass audience before now.

From 1977, the internet became 'music video friendly' with the launch of the website 'ifilm' which feautured a wide range of short clips, music videos and was generally an early version of YouTube. File sharing websites such as Napster and Spotify also appeared, allowing users to share music and video files. With the wider available access to the internet, websites devoted to the uploading and viewing of online videos such as YouTube were launched. These allowed for an even wider viewing of music videos upon demand rather that on a TV schedule. As the general public have the option to upload their own creations directly to these sites, some artists have been discovered online, for example Justin Bieber was discovered online.

The industry is constantly growing with the enhancement of broadband and the constant advances in video clips resulting in high quality with shorter loading times. Our music industry now is still growing and growing thanks to online websites such as YouTube, that have allowed the public to stream and listen to music videos when ever they want.

Brief

My chosen brief for my A2 Media coursework is to design a promotion package  for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with the two of the following:

a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);

a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

Tribute – Tenacious D                                                                                                               Them                      Us

Long time ago me and my brother Kyle here,                                                                  1:10 – 1:13           0:00 – 0:03

we was hitchhikin' down a long and lonesome road.                                                     1:16 – 1:20           0:06 – 0:10

All of a sudden, there shined a shiny demon... in the middle... of the road.               1:22 – 1:30           0:12 – 0:20

And he said:                                                                                                                          1:31 – 1:33           0:21 – 0:23

[Sung]
"Play the best song in the world, or I'll eat your soul." (soul)                                      1:34 – 1:42           0:24 – 0:32

[Spoken]
Well me and Kyle, we looked at each other,                                                                     1:44 – 1:48           0:34 – 0:38

and we each said... "Okay."                                                                                                1:49 – 1:53           0:39 – 0:43

[Sung]
And we played the first thing that came to our heads,                                                  1:54 – 1:57           0:44 – 0:47

Just so happened to be,                                                                                                      1:57 – 1:58           0:47 – 0:48

The Best Song in the World, it was The Best Song in the World.                               1:59 – 2:04           0:49 – 0:54

Look into my eyes and it's easy to see                                                                             2:04 – 2:07           0:54 – 0:57

One and one make two, two and one make three, it was destiny.                                 2:07 – 2:10           0:57 – 1:00

Induction Task

For our induction task to A2 Media, we had to develop our own music video to a song of our choice in groups. In my group were me, Chloe, Billy and Danny and we chose the music video 'Tribute' by Tenacious D. We chose this music video because we thought that it would be a good way for us to experiment with Final Cut Pro which is a programme that is used to edit music videos.
